FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. ETHICS, CONSERVATION & LEGALITY
Is it legal to own a zebra rug in the United States? Yes. All our specimens are Burchell's Zebra (Equus quagga burchellii), which are not an endangered species. Every hide in our collection has been legally imported into the United States under strict U.S. Fish & Wildlife (USFWS) regulations and cleared through all necessary customs protocols.
Where do the hides originate? Every hide is sourced directly from South Africa. Having worked on the front lines of conservation, we only source from suppliers who adhere to well-managed culling and stewardship protocols. This ensures that the removal of specific animals supports the health and biodiversity of the greater ecosystem.
Do you ship to California? No. In accordance with California Penal Code Section 653o, we do not sell or ship any wildlife products to the state of California. Any orders placed with a California shipping address will be immediately cancelled and refunded.
Can I travel internationally with my rug? While the rugs are fully legal within the U.S., they are subject to CITES international trade regulations. We strictly prohibit the re-export of our products without the buyer obtaining their own federal permits. We currently only offer domestic shipping within the United States.
2. THE BESPOKE SELECTION PROCESS
Can I see the exact hide I am purchasing? Absolutely. We understand that a Hide Society Africa rug is a significant investment. Because every hide is a one-of-a-kind natural masterpiece, we offer a Bespoke Selection service. You can contact us directly via WhatsApp at +1 (402) 610 1733 for additional high-resolution photos or a video consultation to view the specific markings of your chosen piece.
What does "A-Grade" mean? "A-Grade" is our highest quality standard. These are hides with exceptional stripe definition, minimal natural scarring, and superior tanning. While every hide features "marks of the wild" that prove its authenticity, our A-Grade selection represents the pinnacle of available specimens.
Are the colours in the photos accurate? We use professional botanical and studio lighting to capture our hides as accurately as possible. However, due to the natural texture of the hair and the calibration of different digital screens, slight variations in tone may occur.
3. SHIPPING & HIGH-VALUE HANDLING
Why is a signature required for delivery? Due to the high value and insured nature of our products, all shipments require an Adult Signature upon delivery. This ensures your investment is handed directly to you and never left unattended.
What are your shipping rates?
-
Orders over $200.00: Complimentary Insured Shipping (Contiguous U.S.).
-
Orders under $200.00: $20.00 Flat Rate Shipping.
-
Alaska & Hawaii: Shipping is calculated at checkout and may be subject to routine state agricultural inspections.
What happens if I miss my delivery? UPS will typically make three attempts to deliver your package. If the shipment is returned to our facility because no one was available to sign, the customer will be responsible for the actual "Return to Sender" fees and the cost of re-shipping the item.
4. CARE & MAINTENANCE
How do I clean my zebra rug? Zebra hair is naturally robust. For regular maintenance, use a vacuum cleaner in the direction of the hair growth (never against the grain) on a low-suction setting. For spills, use a damp cloth with mild soap; never saturate the hide or use harsh chemicals.
Where is the best place to display my rug? While our hides are durable, we recommend avoiding areas of extreme direct sunlight, as prolonged UV exposure can cause natural fading over several years. They are perfect for low-to-medium traffic areas where their detail can be appreciated.
Does the hide have a scent? Our hides undergo a world-class professional tanning process in South Africa, which removes organic odours and leaves the hide supple. Any "new leather" scent will dissipate quickly once the rug is placed in a well-ventilated room.
